The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers both an MA and a PhD program. Students with a BA or equivalent must apply to the MA program and may be admitted into the PhD program upon successful completion of all MA requirements. Students with an MA or equivalent may apply directly to the PhD program.
The MA program offers students two distinct options: Spanish and Spanish American Literatures and Hispanic Linguistics. There are also two options within the PhD program: Spanish and Spanish American Literatures and Medieval and Early Modern Hispanic Literatures.
In the 2010 National Research Council Report the graduate program in Spanish ranks eight nationally in a group of sixty PhD programs in the United States.
