This reading list is intended as a guide for MA and PhD students. It is expected that the MA student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of major literary movements, periods, and masterworks, as well as techniques of literary analysis. Questions on the MA exam will offer some choice of subject matter; it is much more important to be able to deal with some matters in depth than to treat a vast corpus of material superficially. PhD students will also find this list a useful guide; they will be expected to demonstrate a broader and deeper familiarity than that required of the MA candidate. Please consult with the appropriate specialist(s) in so far as "selections" are concerned.
